SPELLING WITHOUT SPACES AND CAPITAL LETTERS
Language is crucial in business and can be an effective tool for global business development. Therefore, learning and knowing several languages offers huge potential for developing business with foreign investors and entrepreneurs. English is the most widely spoken language in the world, making it one of the dominant languages in the business world. Knowing it allows you to develop a business on any of the five continents of the world. It is for this reason that English has become the only language in the world to have attracted more than one billion active learners worldwide. It is the mother tongue in many countries, it is the first foreign language learned in many countries, and there is not a single country in the world where English is not taught in an educational institution. It is used as an official and working language by the world’s leading organisations, and is the basis for countless scientific, technological and other research studies. It is the main language used in developing and using software, and ranks first as the language of the web environment. Many international companies have adopted English as the main working language in their company, even if the country in which the company is registered is not an English-speaking country. Some of the most prominent examples would be NOKIA in Finland and AIRBUS in France. Knowing English will open up huge opportunities for any entrepreneur to expand their business beyond their home country’s borders. It is a huge prospect and an immeasurable market segment worldwide.

THAI IN THE LANGUAGE FAMILY
Thai (ภาษาไทย, phasa thai, pronounced: [pʰāːsǎːtʰāj]), formerly known as the Siamese language, belongs to the Thai-Kadai language family. Its literary language is mainly based on the Bangkok dialect, but apart from the Bangkok dialect, there are also northeastern, northern and southern dialects. The northeastern dialect is similar to the Lao language.
WHO AND HOW MANY SPEAK THAI?
Thai is the official language of Thailand, where it is spoken by 53% of the population. In total, Thai is the mother tongue of 38.9 million people worldwide, including in Laos (7.8%) and Vietnam (1.6%).
THAI ALPHABET
It is believed that the Thai language is based on the Khmer language, which dates back to 611 AD, but the oldest known inscriptions in Thai date from the 13th century. The Thai alphabet is based on the Indian script and is used not only in Thai, but also in Pali and Sanskrit, as well as in several minority languages spoken in Thailand.
THAI PHONETICS
Thai has 21 consonants and 9 vowels, as well as five tones: medium, low, falling, high and rising, which distinguish morphologically identical words.
THAI VOCABULARY
Thai is mostly monosyllabic, except for conjunctions and loanwords. The language has many borrowings from other languages – the oldest borrowings are from Chinese, and many words have their roots in Sanskrit and Khmer. From the 16th century onwards, Thai also borrowed words from Portuguese, but nowadays, English loanwords are also increasingly appearing in the language.

THE ALLURE OF THAILAND
Every year, thousands of immigrants from America, Europe, Canada, and Australia move to Thailand. Some stay permanently, some for several years, some for just a few months. There are various reasons for migration: the climate and nature, especially the beautiful beaches, the different culture and friendly people, as well as the relatively cheap cost of living, from food to rent and transport; and it is currently easy to start your own business in Thailand, for example in the IT sector. According to 2022 statistics, there are around 3.6 million migrants living in Thailand. In recent years, “overwintering” in Thailand has also become popular among Latvians.
When staying in a country for an extended period of time, learning the language at least at a basic level will only be of value. Knowing Thai will not only help you better understand Thai culture and get to know the local people, gaining their respect and friendliness, but it will also help you find your way around the country, especially in urban areas, and protect you from various unpleasant situations that tourists often experience, such as significantly higher prices for services and shopping.
